I never considered myself Russian in part because of my Jewish heritage. But the war in Ukraine had a huge impact on me, and it became impossible to neglect my motherland as I had done before. At first, I was constantly watching news reports and painting small watercolors of myself, often in dark, surreal situations. I also made text works in Russian and English.Shortly after, I taught a course titled: Identity and Self-Portrait at the Age of Apocalypse at the painting department at the Royal Academy of Art in the Haag. I collected different apocalyptic images for my lectures, among others, of destroyed Ukrainian city views and landscapes. These images were almost identical to the scenery from my childhood past: the same (soviet) architecture and nature. Memories and flashbacks from my birthplace overwhelmed me: the view from my window in Moscow from the 11th floor, our family’s Dacha, and travels with my father. It prompted me to paint large-scale landscapes: war images, stills from the movie Stalker (1979), and other apocalyptic footage. In some works, I inserted my naked figure as a kind of wandering ghost. Mentally, the watercolors of destroyed landscapes bound me as an individual to the collective trauma. My method of work tries to magnify the aesthetics of fragility and decay. The landscapes, inspired by my experiences in nature, offer familiar yet surreal spaces where joy and serenity are attainable, even amidst global instability. By transforming the canvases into speculative scenes, I invite contemplation on the possibility of peace and joy beyond present crises. The paintings offer complementary perspectives on how we engage with the ghosts of the past and envision possible futures. Embracing both the tangible and the imagined, my work becomes a transformative exploration of identity, memory, and resilience—where light is not just seen, but felt, thought, and remembered. <img Sadness contains numerous vivid, text-based drawings from the artist’s diary of words, forms, and colours, as well as photographs of her exhibitions and performances. The publication, created by graphic designer Franziska Morlok of studio Rimini Berlin, presents the act of drawing as a self-contemplative study, whereby the artist hopes to provoke a similar contemplation in the reader. Moreover, an essay written by independent curator Katia Krupennikova examines Birger’s work in connection with significant dilemmas in today’s society, such as the concept of the group versus individualism and interdependency. The dialogues with Dr.Birger (my alter ego) during Corona lock-down were centered on isolation, connectivity, and interdependence or something personal the visitors wanted to talk about. Dr.Birger visualized the conversations with the participants, incorporating her own responses into the drawings she simultaneously made. Each session lasted approximately 20 minutes. photos by Roos WolthersIn October 2021, after a year and a half of the Corona19 pandemic, our perceptions have changed about the world we live in and about ourselves. Who are we truly and what do we want to be? Could we use that moment as an opportunity to restart our lives? A rebirth blessing in disguise? In the performance Rebirth held in Tot Zover, the museum of death, Dr. Birger discussed these questions with the participants.Dr.Birger talked to the museum’s visitors about the concept of rebirth. Based on the answers, she made drawings in which she incorporated her perspective on the participants' experiences and ideas.The drawings were titled by the names of the participants. <img The day we are most depressed, according to British psychologist Chris Arnell. Monday January 17 2022 was probably The Bluest Monday ever.&nbsp; Dr.Birger participated in The Bluest Monday festival which took place from 17 till 23 of January 2022 in Beeldend Gesproken gallery. The visitors were invited to share their worries, problems, and thoughts with Dr.Birger in her post Freudian cabinet. Each meeting lasted approximately 20 min during which Dr.Birger simultaneously visualized the dialogues in her intuitive abstract drawings. Reflect Youself! curated by Judith van Meeuwen I made a performative object where the museum’s visitors could stand and take a selfie with #kadeconnects. They could see themselves as a deconstructed reflection but also as a part of the total network-the universe.
